Thanks, that’s an interesting observation. I know of Kruuk’s work though have not read it. I consider myself a Tolkien fan too and enjoyed this book, though I don’t fall in the category of hardcore, walking-encyclopedia, kind of fan 😉

]]>By: Wesley Parish/2021/07/15/book-review-the-science-of-middle-earth-a-new-understanding-of-tolkien-and-his-world/comment-page-1/#comment-39159Thu, 13 Jan 2022 09:50:19 +0000/?p=14610#comment-39159I came across this book in the local friendly bookshop, and read the chapter titled iirc “Are Dwarves Hyenas?” As a fan of Hans Kruuk of “The Spotted Hyena” U of Chicago Press fame, I was intrigued, and judging from my reading of Hans Kruuk’s monumental text on the Spotted Hyena, and my knowledge of the environmental characteristics that cause large animals to shrink in size, they gave a very good explanation as to why the Dwarves might be smaller than other hominids. IMHO it’s a worthwhile book for Tolkien fans.
