[…] When Karin explains to Mark why she found herself caring about the venomous lumpsucker, she tells the story of how she stumbled upon the concept of inherent value, which is a well-known and thorny issue in the field of monetary valuation of biodiversity. It’s the idea that animals don’t only have value if humans value them, because that’s pretty anthropocentric. Too utility-focused for moral comfort. It is the wildcard that makes it hard to express the value of a species in money. For the story that Beauman is telling, it is nice that he works us through all these real and often expressed arguments in the scientific field, but it also makes the novel heavy on exposition. Beauman lectures well, but it is still a lecture. For an actual non-fiction book about valuation of biodiversity, I’d forward you to The Inquisitive Biologist. […]

I am reading Beauman’s Venomous Lumpsucker right now which is like a thought experiment about an extreme version of biodiversity offsets. I will link to this review in the review that I will write soon about that book.
